Open seminar with Stanley Greenstein: Regulating Artificial Intelligence – From Ethical Codes to Hard Law

Welcome to this open seminar on the legal aspects of artificial intelligence with Stanley Greenstein, Associate Professor in Law and Information Technology (IT) at the Department of Law, Stockholm University.

While Artificial Intelligence (AI) remains an elusive phenomenon, it cannot be disputed that there is currently an incredible amount of hype concerning how it can be put to use to improve society. There are certainly many potential benefits to society from the increased use of technologies incorporating elements of AI, yet there are also risks with its use.

One of the main functions of the law is to protect society from risks, including those posed by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. As artificial intelligence has increasingly found its way into technologies critical to the functioning of society, so too have the risks with artificial intelligence increasingly been illuminated.

This event focuses on why the characteristics of artificial intelligence that have raised concern and sets out past and future developments in the law intended to counter these risks, culminating in the first ever law in the world intended to address the risks associated with artificial intelligence, namely the Artificial Intelligence Act.
