This KIB Talk shows why we need clear, honest visuals and how this accelerates understanding and impact – on both the lab bench and the news site. Drawing on Matthias' path from academia to the German news outlet DER SPIEGEL, we'll explore how to tailor graphics to different audiences, communicate uncertainty without eroding trust, and use reader feedback to refine designs. You'll eventually get a glimpse into SPIEGEL's visual newsroom and learn about storytelling techniques.

From biochemistry to visual data journalism
Matthias Stahl's journey has been a bit unconventional. After earning a PhD in biochemistry and researching antibiotic-resistant bacteria, Matthias discovered his passion for data mining and gradually became a bioinformatician. This led him to Stockholm and KI, where he worked on personalized cancer treatments for childhood leukemia and he also realized the power of clear, impactful data visualizations. After founding his own data visualization consultancy, he soon joined the German news magazine DER SPIEGEL. Today, he is leading their data & visualizations department, combining data science, design, and storytelling to make complex data accessible and engaging. His work spans interactive web applications and static graphics, blending data, art, and design into compelling narratives.
This KIB Talk is held in English. There will be time for Q&A.
KIB Talks – Visualisation Wednesdays!
During the semester, KIB offers a series of KIB Talks open to all doctoral students, researchers and other employees at KI. The subjects varies and we add new topics regularly. For nine Wednesdays leading up to Christmas, we will be focusing extra on visualisation from different perspectives! See the calendar for times and registration. We are also happy to organise a KIB Talk (a workshop or a presentation "on demand") specially for your department or other. Please let us know what you're interested in!
Please be aware that the library will not provide a certificate of attendance for this KIB Talk.
