Our book collections
The library acquires books for several different collections at both library units (Solna and Flemingsberg). Here is a brief description of the collections you can find in the library.
Specialist books
The library has a large collection of specialist books in various fields of medicine. Literature for the this collections is purchased based on suggestions from the users. Recommended course literature, which is normally purchased in one copy, is also placed here. A special suite is the KI dissertations, which go back to the first publication in the 1870s.
In addition to the non-fiction collection, there are a number of special collections with literature purchased based on specific criteria.
Course books
Books for the course book collection are purchased from the course lists sent to the library. Mandatory course literature is purchased in a set of at least five copies at the library unit where the course is given.
The course book collection is located in special, separate rooms, close to where the staff is available if you have any questions.
Camera Obscura and Laterna Magica
Camera Obscura is the name of the humanities collection in Solna and Laterna Magica is its counterpart in Flemingsberg. The collections focus on fiction, biographies, and other literature related to medicine, disease, and care. They also include subjects such as medical history and psychology.
The collections also include books with KI connection, that is, books about KI and/or where the author has a KI affiliation.
The selection of titles is made based on subject monitoring of literature that fits the collections' themes, but we also welcome purchase suggestions from our users.
Equal Opportunities
The collection for equal opportunities is the newest of KIB's special collections and has been funded through funds from the Central Council for equal opportunities at KI. The collection is intended to complement the library's other literature and aims to highlight norm-breaking and norm-critical perspectives in areas such as healthcare, medicine, education, and psychology. It is part of the preventive work against discrimination and aims to make stereotypical patterns and excluding norms visible, as well as to create conditions for a curious and critical examination of our own thought and action patterns. Our hope is that the collection will inspire and contribute to creating a more inclusive university.
Location of special collections in the library
The special collections are located in the social corners, with the exception of the course book collections. It is hoped that the social corners will invite relaxation and reflection, and inspire reading beyond the pure course literature. Fiction and biographies often provide a new and interesting approach to the area of the special collection, and have an informative value that can provide depth and the possibility of empathy that goes far beyond the text of the specialised books.
