Studying at a Swedish university can feel disorienting and confusing, and your professors may have expectations of you that are different from those found in your home country. This short workshop will introduce you to the conventions of university study in Sweden, allow you to ask questions and provide you with tools and concrete tips that will help you succeed in your studies at KI. 

This session focuses on the literature review, an important part of your half-time review (and of your thesis). You have the literature sources you need, but how will you write the review? 

In order to communicate your research to others (and pass your courses), you need to understand and master the conventions of academic writing. This workshop will introduce you to those conventions and provide you with strategies for writing clear and well-structured academic texts. The workshop will include hands-on writing activities.

As a Master’s student, you are expected to read and comprehend complex academic texts. During this workshop, you will learn techniques and strategies for doing so. In addition, you will practice reading strategically, that is, reading to improve critical thinking, to build vocabulary, and to improve academic writing skills. 

To communicate your research to others, your writing needs to be clear and well-structured. This applies not just to the overall structure of your text, but also to your sentences. In this workshop, you will receive hands-on tips and techniques for writing the kind of clear, concise and well-structured English-language sentences that will help you both succeed in your studies and effectively communicate your research to others. 

The ability to write about your research in a manner that is understandable and interesting to the public is an essential skill for any scientist. KI guidelines for writing the doctoral thesis also strongly recommend that you write a popular science summary in English. This workshop will provide you with models for and hands-on practice in adapting content, structure and style when writing the popular science summary in English for your doctoral thesis.

Giving oral presentations is an important part of scholarly exchange. During this workshop, you will learn how to plan, prepare for, structure and deliver an effective oral presentation. We will also discuss how to deal with being nervous.

Writing the comprehensive summary or “kappa” for your thesis will be different from anything you have written before, not least because you are writing for a different purpose and different audience than a research article. Additionally, you will be writing the kappa on your own, not with your research group as co-authors. So, what do you need to think about when you write your comprehensive summary? Join us for a hands-on workshop during which we discuss structure, synthesis and writing techniques for the kappa. 

During this session, you will receive hands-on advice on how you may generally use AI in your writing process, how you should not use it, and why. You will also get tips on how to construct prompts to ensure that you truly improve your text while learning more.
