The sick, soft maternal skeleton

This plaster cast shows a pelvis with rickets. Rickets leads to soft bone formation and was once a common disease in Sweden and Europe.

Women who suffered from rickets as children developed narrow birth canals, which often led to both the foetus and mother dying during childbirth. The pelvimeter on the left would have been used to measure the woman's pelvis.
