Face of AIDS Film Archive theme: San Francisco

Among the earliest films in the Face of Aids Film Archive are the clips from the Fourth International AIDS Conference held in Stockholm in 1988. This summer, 6-10 July, the 23rd International AIDS Conference was set to be held in the cities of San Francisco and Oakland, USA. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the conference will be virtual this year.

To note the conference we have been diving into the Face of AIDS Film Archive and put together a theme on San Francisco. Here you will find clips from, mostly, the early years of the AIDS epidemic. As one of the pioneering HIV activists Martin Delaney puts it in one of the clips on San Francisco: “If AIDS was a bomb back in the early 1980s, this was Ground Zero, this is where the bomb exploded.

Welcome to watch documentaries and interviews from the 1980s to the present, hear the voices of activists, patients, researchers and hospital staff from our unique film archive!
