Consultations on visualisation

Do you need advice on communicating your research visually? If you are a doctoral student or researcher at KI, you can receive support with data and information visualisation. We offer guidance that boosts your own visual communication skills, and help you convey your findings in an effective and accessible way.

How we can support you

The consultation service is staffed by a interdisciplinary team of statisticians, designers and librarians with competencies in medicine, visual communication, illustration, accessibility and usability. 

Below are some examples of scenarios where we can provide advice and tips: 

  • you want to discuss the purpose, story, target audience and value of a planned visualisation 
  • you want to design a graphical abstract to summarise your research article
  • you want to explain your research problem, project or methodological approach using a schematic diagram or illustration 
  • you need support with visualising data, for example choosing the right type of chart for a dataset or decluttering a chart to make it clearer
  • you want to get started with using R to visualise your data 
  • you need to give feedback on someone else's visualisations
  • you want to find openly available graphical material (such as icons) that you can reuse or modify
  • you are unsure which type of graphics software that you could use
  • you need support in testing whether your visualisations meet accessibility requirements 
  • you would like a sounding board when you and your colleagues discuss data visualisation and information design together (for example within a doctoral student group).

Good to know before your consultation

  • Individual consultations take place primarily via Zoom, but it is also possible to meet on campus if you prefer. 
  • Please share background information about your project in advance, so that we can prepare more effectively for the meeting. 
  • Please note that we do not produce data visualisations or visual materials on commission. The aim of our support service is to strengthen your own ability to communicate your research.

  • If you would prefer to have someone produce visual materials for you on commission, you can for example contact Bildmakarna, Illustratörscentrum and KI's procured agency for graphic design.
  • If you are a researcher at KI and need help with visualising your research data using state-of-the-art data analysis and visualisation techniques, contact InfraVis, the Swedish national infrastructure for data visualisation. 
  • If you wish to carry out bibliometric analyses or visualise publication data, please contact KIB's publication support team at kib@ki.se.
  • If you would like advice on, for example, study design and data analysis, you can contact Clinicum, which provides coordinated methodological support for researchers at KI and Region Stockholm. It consists of a broad network of researchers in bioinformatics, biostatistics, epidemiology, AI and machine learning who offer scientific advice free of charge. If you require more extensive statistical support, there is also the option of contacting KI's internal support services or producing from KI's framework agreement for statistical services.
